YES | Owner of a Lonely Heart

Home | TAC Articles & 411 |TAC Archives

As I put together these pages on the Artists Code, I’m trying to alternate between older and newer music. This establishes the code's steady existence throughout time.

Owner of a Lonely Heart by YES, from the year 1983,  tells quite a symbolic story. Here, I'm going to place a few of the clues concentrating on the end of the video where the code picks up its pace.

If video above isn't working grab it here (link opens new window/tab): http://youtu.be/2vV_L7OQtU0

Let's start with our elusive "Y"  that is usually present when the AC is telling a story. Then we'll move toward the end of the video. BUT please keep this clue in mind as you read through the rest of this post. I've captioned the snip below. (frame 0:36)

Y

Looking at the  video snip  below ( frame 2:54),  you can  see 114, and I'm sure you know what 411 means, so we know there is some important information that follows this clue. The fact that it's in reverse likely suggests the down plan of pi.

equationNext we have an equation Notice the number's alignment as if to state it's a math equation 02-1=1. Now, look at the bottom line (WER1). To decode this you need to know that in the Artists Code" ER" and 9-11 are synonymous terms, so can we conclude (w=23) and ER=9-11 giving us a final conclusion of w=23/ER=9/11/1 or 01?  It's possible -  let me prove this possibility with corresponding clues below.

411 information

This is the same snip as above with the colors inverted to enhance the numbers/letters.

Here we have great tower symbolism! You could be thinking; but there are four panels showing. Ok, now I ask you this, which panel is he jumping from? It's the second panel right? So it's safe to assume the artist is inferring the first 2 panels as symbols. I'll prove this with my next clue.

skyscraper

What do we see below but black markers on the first 2 panels - confirming my first two panel analysis above. AND we see white markers on 2 other panels located behind the raven indicating 2 "Birds".

Birds are OFTEN used a symbolic airplanes in music videos and film.  Finally, notice that the bird is BLACK confirming the 2 black spots on the first 2 panels.

towers?

White markers behind raven below.

Unfortunately video clarity was low but I captured what I could below. What you will notice when you watch the video is the bird swooping through the sky passing over 2 buildings then fading/disappearing into the side of a skyscraper. Coincidence? That's for you to decide.

PLEASE watch the end of this video to confirm for yourself - link/video posted at the start of this note. Low quality screen captures below. REMEMBER you don't need sound to view symbolism so take a break from working and check out the video. :)

ADDITIONAL CLUES

Let's start with a large "X" in steel. If you are one of my regular viewers then you know what this means - for those reading for the first time X=roman numeral 10 or 1-0.

x

Below is a wardrobe inconsistency. Wardrobe inconsistencies are COMMONONLY USED in music videos and film to help tell a story.
The suspenders in these shots are significant. In the first clip you'll notice the suspenders are in the shape of a tall triangle. Triangles in the Artists' Code ALWAYS suggest power. The frames immediately following this /\ show the suspenders again in their usual shape of an X BUT in the artists code X's mean 1-0, so we group them together and have a symbolic sentence.

suspenders

While we're on the topic of symbolic sentences, let's rewind to the beginning of the video and review the elevator and its meaning. I won't give you the answer but I'll spell it out for you in symbols :)

Notice in frame 0:29 there is a MOCK elevator on the set - this is a pointer to the elevator sequence in future frames. Pointers to important sequences are another common code trick.
Proceeding to the next frame (frame 2:27) the elevator doors close - in frame 2:29 they close AGAIN indicating 2 "elevators" can you guess what the elevator symbolizes now? If not, then proceed to the final clue where the elevator is seen from the shaft GOING DOWN. Is it clearer now?
That's all the help you're getting from me, but I think you understand what is being spelled out here.

Those elusive artists! You never know how they're going to spread their message ;) That concludes this edition of The Artists Code - thanks for reading!
